Retrofit Automation
Home automation for existing villas and homes in Dubai.
Most homes in Dubai were finished long before anyone planned automation. Fortue surveys what is already installed and designs a retrofit that adds control of lighting, AC, curtains and security with as little disruption as possible.
Start from what exists
A retrofit is an engineering job, not a shopping list.
In a finished villa, the wiring, the distribution boards, the AC system and the ceilings are already fixed. The right retrofit works with them rather than against them. That means checking which circuits can be controlled, whether switch boxes have a neutral wire and enough depth, which AC controllers can be integrated, and where the Wi-Fi is weak.
From that survey, Fortue designs a system that uses wireless technologies such as Zigbee where cabling cannot be added, wired elements where walls or ceilings are already being opened, and one app and set of keypads for the whole home.
Typical retrofit scope
Lighting
Relay and dimmer modules behind existing switches, or smart switch fascias, with scenes per room.
Air-conditioning
Integration of fan-coil, split or VRF controllers where the equipment allows it.
Curtains & blinds
Motorised tracks with wired, wireless or battery motors depending on the power available.
Security & network
Cameras, video intercom, smart locks and a stronger Wi-Fi network that ties it together.

What to check before automating an existing villa.
Switch boxes and neutral wires
Many smart switches and modules need a neutral wire and a deep enough back box. A survey of a few typical switch positions shows which devices will fit and avoids surprises during installation.
Lighting drivers
Dimming existing LED lighting only works if the drivers are dimmable and compatible with the chosen dimmer. Where they are not, switching only, or a driver change in key rooms, may be the better answer.
AC equipment
The make and model of the AC system decides how it can be integrated. Some systems connect through a gateway; others need a replacement thermostat or an interface. See HVAC and AC control.
Wi-Fi and the network
Wireless automation, cameras and apps depend on the network. In many existing villas the first step is better Wi-Fi coverage with properly placed access points. See home networking.
Reliability of wireless systems
Wireless meshes need enough mains-powered devices to relay signals, especially through concrete floors. A good retrofit design plans device placement for coverage, not just for function. Read KNX vs Zigbee for a Dubai villa.
Plan for the next renovation
If a kitchen, majlis or floor is due for renovation, it can be an opportunity to add wired elements there and keep the rest wireless.
Retrofit options
The right technology for a finished home.
Each option has trade-offs in reliability, appearance and cost. The survey decides the mix, not a preferred brand.
- Hidden modules behind existing switches
- Smart switch fascias in existing back boxes
- Zigbee and Matter wireless devices
- Wired additions where ceilings are open
- AC gateways and smart thermostats
- Battery or wireless curtain motors
- Access-point Wi-Fi with minimal cabling
- One app, keypads and voice control

Questions
Retrofit automation in Dubai: questions
Can I automate my villa without rewiring?
In most cases, yes. Wireless technologies such as Zigbee, modules behind existing switches and smart switch fascias can add control of lighting, curtains and AC without new cabling. A survey confirms what is practical.
Will retrofit automation be as reliable as a wired system?
A well-designed wireless system can be very dependable, but it needs careful device placement and a stable network. For large villas, a hybrid with some wired elements is often the most robust option.
Can existing lights be dimmed?
Only if the existing LED drivers are dimmable and compatible with the dimmer. Where they are not, lights can still be switched and included in scenes.
Do I need to move out during installation?
Usually not. Retrofit installation can be planned room by room around the household.
What is the difference between this and apartment automation?
The approach is similar, but villas usually have more circuits, AC zones, outdoor areas and network coverage to plan. For apartments, see our apartment automation page.
